It was a Foodie in Miami Week!

Last week was a big day for Foodies in Miami!

On Thursday, the Miami Herald featured a Guide to Miami’s Newest Restaurants on the front page. The Herald has changed its formatting to feature one story on the front page, which they then go in depth on in the rest of the A section. Usually, I don’t care for the in-depth look, but this story I read cover-to-cover.

I haven’t been to ANY of the 38 new restaurants written about, but I made a short list and want to start checking out some of these spots, including Amal, Barabakoa by Finka, Bottled Blond Pizzeria + Beer Garden, Crudo’s Art House, The Key Club, Salt & Straw, Smoke & Dough and The One on Sunset (formerly Swensons). If I was to discern a common theme of these new restaurants it would be pizza, barbeque and upscale steak and seafood restaurants.

In other exciting Foodie News the Michelin Stars came out on June 9th and Miami has one two-star restaurant- L’ Atelier de Joel Robuchon. The Michelin guide started way back in 1926 as a way to encourage customers to take more Road Trips, thus buying more Michelin tires. It is now known as the global standard of restaurant reviews. One star denotes a restaurant “worthy of a detour”, while two stars is a restaurant worth “a special journey.”

The one-star Miami restaurants that made the list are: Ariete, Boia de, Cote, The Den at Sushi Azubu, Elcielo Miami, Hiden, Le Jardier, Los Felix, Stubborn Seed and The Surf Club Restaurant. The only one I’ve been to of these is Ariete (which I love!), but I really want to try Stubborn Seed, Boia de and Elicielo.

A special category for Michelin is the Bib Gourmand, which honors high quality restaurants with reasonably priced food. For 2022, the restaurants awarded this honor are: Ghee Indian Kitchen, Chug’s Diner, Krus Kitchen, Zitz Sum, Bachour, Tinta Y Cafe, Sanguich de Miami, Lung Yai Thai Tapas, Red Rooster, Hometown Barbecue, Doya, Zak the Baker, Itamae, Michael’s Genuine, Mandolin Aegean Bistro, El Turco, La Natural, Lucali and Phuc Yea. I’ve been to six of these, but really want to try Zitz Sum, Lung Yai Thai Tapas, Itamae and Phuc Yea. I’ve been to Michael’s Genuine, but not since they’ve redone it, so that’s another one to add to my list.

The Design District was the big winner in the Michelin ratings, as it had four restaurants winning accolades. In other encouraging Miami restaurant news, Cafe La Trova, Michelle Bernstein’s baby, was awarded 6th Best Bar in North America and Best Bar in the the South. This is a place I’ve wanted to go for a while, as it’s a bar with food and music on Calle Ocho! Bernstein, a James Beard award winner for Best Chef in the South, is also re-opening her popular restaurant Sra. Martinez in Coral Gables in the old Open Stage Space.

That probably won’t be happening for awhile, but that’s ok. Foodie in Miami has a lot of new restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants to try in the meantime! Which restaurants do you want to try?
